When you punch a fire extinguisher, the level of expectation for common sense is low. That said, Amare Stoudemire decided to get in a fight with a Twitter follower. He ended up direct messaging them, where he insulted them by calling them a ‘fag’. Somehow he was able to top his own stupidity!
The NBA, in swift action, decided to fine Amare $50,000! Ouch, right? Well not really. Let’s run down some numbers.
Amare makes around $20,000,000 a season. If we break that down weekly that breaks down to $384,615. If we considered Amare a tradtional 40 hour a week employee he’d make around $9,615 an hour. Amare’s fine breaks down to just a little over five hours of work. In New York, the minimum wage is $7.25. Putting Amare’s fine in perspective that would break out to $37.70. Sure Amare’s fine may seem large.
The truth is it’s less than a slap on the wrist and if we broke it down to a lowly New Yorker it would be about the cost of a long cab ride. And given that Amare still has another three years of making top dollar, I’m not sure he’ll even notice the $50,000 missing.
